When the vehicle is in the ON position:

 

  • Check to make the vehicle gear is in the PARK position. If it is not it will not release the key and you will not be able to start your car.

 

  • Look at the dashboard to make sure that the gear is in the right position. Sometimes you can accidentally knock it out of gear.

 

  • You can gently wiggle the key to see if you can loosen the key while it is in the ignition. Remember to do this very gently so that you do not break the key off in the ignition.

 

When the vehicle is in the OFF position:

 

  • Check the battery. We know that this sounds like a practical thing to do but you might be surprised to learn that not every driver knows that this is something that can prevent them from removing the key from the ignition.
